The single battery for sale is a reproduction of a Western Electric version of the #6 dry cell battery initially produced by the National Carbon Company. NCC introduced the first commercially produced #6 dry cells around 1896. and was the sole source of this product for the auto industry and telephone companies in the early 1900s. In the early years of production of the #6 dry cells, the terminals were the binding post type. In the 1921 WE Catalog, Fahnestock clips (shown on these units) were offered as an additional ordering option.
Western Electric introduced its' Blue Bell label batteries around 1911. This particular label was introduced sometime after 1916, as evidenced by the image of the WE 1317C compact telephone (with short transmitter bracket and steep sloped writing shelf) not produced prior to 1916. If you have a Western Electric plain front wall phone with the steep slope shelf, this reproduction dry cell is correct for display inside.
These reproductions are configured to produce 1.5V each with two D-Cell battery holders (wired in parallel), and feature bottom entry access to allow easy replacement of the batteries (not included) when necessary. A removable PVC Cap covers the bottom. Cell dimensions (6-1/2”H X 2-1/2” Dia.), label graphics and colors are nominally consistent with the original dry cell equipped with Fahnestock terminals. The top is potted with epoxy. Weight is 1 lb.
