Western Electric 5 cent coin track.
Originals of these coin tracks were used in Western Electric
5 cent 3-slot payphones series: 160, 170, and 180
from the 1930s to the 1950s.
When the cost of a call from a payphone increased to 10 cents
these five cent coin tracks were replaced with a stainless steel track
like the one pictured in the last picture that is on the right.
They were designed to function with a dime or two nickels.
Original 5 cent tracks are almost impossible to find today.
Many 160 series payphones are missing the correct coin chute. This coin chute was also in the 180 series payphones until they were turned into 190s series which took a dime .
Some lead coin tracks have been reproduced by a few collectors in the past.
Those coin tracks were for early 50G type 2-piece payphones.
They were made entirely of lead castings.
This coin chute has the steel plate which is exactly like the original . It was not easy to reproduce or manufacture. There will be very few of these for sale .
Reproducing the top plate was very costly. Lots of time and expense for scanning and laser programming was done by someone so we could now all have the correct rare coin chute for our payphones
